Happy Teachers’ Day!

Teacher Caricature by Luthfi MustafahA very heartfelt Happy Teachers’ Day to all my colleagues at Hwa Chong Institution, and in the various schools around Singapore! The life of a teacher is often full of stress and frustration, but a public holiday such as this that highlights recognition and appreciation for our profession goes a long way to making us feel as if what we are doing is worthwhile.

In the United States (where I come from), there’s no such thing as Teachers’ Day, and teachers very often go unappreciated by students and unsupported by school administration. This has led to a high burnout rate, with many teachers quitting the profession within only five years.

I’m very grateful that teachers are valued so highly in Singapore, and that an entire day has been devoted to honoring us.
