A couple of creative writing competitions are currently being run for young Singaporeans with a passion for the written word:

Paper Planes 2010: Let Your Words Take Flight! — A sit-down timed competition on a given topic; the 15 shortlisted stories from each division will be posted online for voting by the general public, and then passed to the judges for final judging. Potential cash prizes can reach $500, and prizes will be awarded in a presentation ceremony in July.

Young Commonwealth Essay Competition — Organized each year by The Royal Commonwealth Society for all countries within the aegis of the UK Commonwealth, this international competition will, for 2010, focus on the topics of science, technology and society. Over 60,000 young people enter each year, and potential prizes can include cash awards, workshops with leading writers, a gala awards ceremony in central London, and seeing one’s work featured in the worldwide press.

Interested students should approach their English / Language Arts teacher for further details and contest applications.
