Singapore Lion

Last night, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong presided over the launch of The Singapore Lion: A Biography of S. Rajaratnam by Irene Ng (ISEAS Publishing). Concerned that Singaporeans would only remember “Raja” from his drafting of the Singapore pledge, MP Ng took four years to complete the book, based partially on previously unpublished letters, confidential records and transcripts of interviews.

Asha Popatlal covered the event for Channel NewsAsia:

Ng, author of “The Singapore Lion,” said: “If I may leave you with Mr Rajaratnam’s words, ‘The only thing you can be certain about in this otherwise uncertain world is that the past is unchangeable. The present will disappear in a moment. But there will always be a tomorrow to be shaped as you wish. You can make the tomorrow you want, provided you have the wisdom, the guts and the will to struggle for it.'”

One of Mr Rajaratnam’s firmest convictions – that of multi-racialism where no one race has pre-eminence over another – remains just as relevant an issue today, especially with the recent debate about double-barrelled race classification.

According to PM Lee, “The enduring message of the book must be to appreciate what person it takes to master events and to shape the future of a country. Raja had a favorite quote: ‘ An army of sheep led by a lion is mightier than an army of lions led by a sheep.’ And Raja was indeed a lion.”

The book is available for purchase at the publisher’s website.

Kinokuniya’s main store on Orchard Road will host a Meet-the-Author event this Sunday, 7 February, 2-3 p.m.
